Thousands of hours of free high-definition and standard-definition television are broadcast past most American homes every week. Yet, they are largely disregarded in favor of cable, satellite, and internet programs. OTA television began transitioning to digital while it appeared to have lost its function.
In contrast, if you've already dropped your cable or satellite subscription in favor of streaming and DVDs from the library, a networked digital tuner can cover a void for free television that you can stream, capture, and watch on many devices without limits.
With the help of a cable card, one of the networked OTA tuners from SiliconDust may receive subscription-based digital television. You may view live television or record it for later replay on any computer or mobile device connected to a local network using the appropriate software. Local storage is not available on the tuners.
Build and Design
A small plastic box measuring 92x93mm and 28mm high, with only three connections on the rear panel — female TV aerial socket, 10/100 ethernet port, and DC power outlet — houses the SiliconDust hardware in this application. A short length of ethernet wire and a 5 V power converter are included in the package.
The HDHomeRun does not have a portable antenna, but as HD broadcasts demand a strong RF signal, it is best used with a fixed roof aerial.
If you haven't tried to get Freeview HD before, you'll probably need a new antenna, as HD broadcasts may be located on channels far apart from those you would have tuned in to in analog-only days. If this bothers you, a new wideband antenna is an answer.
Live TV with HDHomeRun Connect
For our first attempt at using HDHomeRun CONNECT on a Mac, we used SiliconDust's HDHomeRun utility download. The HDHomeRun VIEW program for watching live TV is included in this package, as is a terminal script that checks the current firmware and downloads and installs any upgrades it finds online, just like the Windows version.
Our firmware was upgraded from version 20150505 to version 20150605. Our third-party network filter probably caused the initial failure with OS X, but when we attempted it again with Windows 7, the operation completed almost rapidly and successfully.MYou may also use the web browser interface by going to my.hdhomerun.com in your browser.
HDHomeRun Connect Review: Live TV Recording
We utilized Elgato EyeTV 3.6.8 software to verify that the CONNECT device on the network was capable of recording by starting the application's Setup Wizard and communicating with the CONNECT device. A short survey of the digital TV broadcast multiplexes turned up over a hundred channels on nine different theaters, including the long-awaited Freeview HD stations, which were now accessible.
Audio is AAC 16-bit/48 kHz with a bit rate of 128 kbps for standard stereo transmissions, while a video is MPEG-4 AVC at 1080i/25 resolution. With the inclusion of 5.1-channel surround sound, AAC is used for select feature films and sporting events such as Wimbledon, which may be streamed in high-quality sound.
Few Bundled Software Alternatives
SiliconDust's lack of desktop applications is intriguing. A wide range of software is supported, from Windows Media Center to MythTV under Linux or other Unix distributions to respective devices. With instant Pro, you may watch live TV on your mobile device. I used EyeTV and InstaTV Pro to test the Connect model. An integrated hardware encoder in the Extend decreases the storage space and bandwidth required for streaming video from native DTV codecs to H.264 on-the-fly.
The Connect worked properly with EyeTV on a Mac connected over ethernet. However, InstaTV Pro had pauses and errors over a Wi-Fi network. To get the best HD streaming performance, the InstaTV developers advocate utilizing a 5GHz network with 802.11n or 802.11ac.
However, my home network doesn't have different network names for 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. If you're serious about mobile streaming, it may be essential to set up separate networks for each frequency, like Apple's Wi-Fi communication systems and most other continuous dual-band routers do.
Could You Turn It On And Listen In With No Interruptions?
HoweverIt's more than just a cinch. Even though I was familiar with EyeTV's OTA recording, we live in a signal shadow. While the giant broadcast towers in our region are visible from a distance, they are hidden from view at the bottom of the hill, so we only receive a weak penumbra of reception and reflection. Even the EyeTV tuner hardware was plagued by problems.
Since I've been using my HDHomeRun for some weeks now, I've noticed that it has more excellent discrimination and signal lock than the EyeTV, which was being pushed to its limit in terms of performance. It's not simply EyeTV's fault that there are dropouts while using the antenna to tune in.
